Mexico Trip

So I just got back from a trip to Mexico from March 30th- April 9th. It was a youth missions trip and I went as a youth leader. We built 7 houses altogether in Tecate (near Tiawana) We drove down in vans (it took 25 hours each way!) It was an awsome time building houses for Mexicans and spending time with youth. 10 youth gave their lives to Christ on the trip...which is incredible. I had some opportunities to pray with some of them and hopefully encourage them. I am probably starting up a homegroup for grade 9 girls with Angie which will include bible study, prayer, and hanging out and chilaxing. I will put up pictures soon of the Mexico trip.

Its been even longer

Wow I haven't written in here in ages. (partly for forgetting my password and than suddenly having it dawn on me - today)  I miaswell use the space here for something. I will talk about a research paper I am trying to develop but am not sure what exactly it is that I want to say. I am not suppose to have any religious content and for the most part am to keep it secular. Maybe I will try to sneak God in somehow. Some ideas:

Consummerism/ affluenza / materialism.

What are the causes  and consequences?  Why is our culture (and the world becoming) so absorbed in the accumulation of things? This phenomenon is partly due to insecurity and cultural influences or models.

Buying things provides compensation when, for example, self-worth, coping ability, safety, and approval are low. Studies have revealed that people who persue materialistic values have less empathy, "use" there friends for their own selfish desires, and compete rather than cooperate. This degrades the vital need for interpersonal trusting and warm relationships.

Other speculations of this insecurity are divorce, parental styles and institutional structures.

Materialistic values and models endorse materialism in our culture through parental values, lifestyle of family and peers, messages in popular culture  (TV shows: price is right or who wants to be a millionare?)

A bit on happiness

Why does there seem to be a negative correlation between wealth and happiness?

Happiness is probably something that cannot be attained by hard work or good luck. Studies have shown that traits such as extroversion, friendliness, trust, and conscientiousness tend to contribute to a persons happiness and an overall feel of control over ones life.

A study found that the more income disparity there is between a community is linked to a greater dissatisfaction with life. Upward comparison = less satisfied. Downward comparison = more satisfied.

Happiness causes success rather than success causing happiness.

Linking happiness to achievment of goals could cause one to become anxious and stressed especially when these goals are unmet. Focusing on the present diverts attention away from the past or future. Eg: painting or playing an instrument.

Happiness is found in the process not the product; the venture not the final destination.

Some God talk

Jesus says "I am the way the truth and the life" The word "way" makes me think of the venture or journey.

Paul has said (I think in philipians) that he has learned to be satisfied with what ever he has or lack thereof. If he has a lot or a little he is not altered. This shows that happiness (or joy) is not found in what we have but in something else.

Jesus says that whoever looses their  life for Him will find it and whoever saves their life will loose it. When we are constantly striving to make our life better with things that we buy we only become less satisfied because we realize we've wasted our time in something that doesn't give true (or permanent) happiness. Think of all the stress and disappointment we can save from ourselves if we just give up persuing empty goals and hollow ambitions. I know that when I release the pressure that is chained with achieving and bettering myself I feel a freedom in my spirit, because all that matters is God. If we abide by His will we can ask him anything and he will give it to us. When we are in his will, our prayers will reflect that and we can have complete faith that he is faithful.

Its been awhile

Wow its been quite awhile since I've last reported in here. We only have about a week left. These past 2 weeks we have spent time with a North Carolina team, which consisted of 6 Afro Americans and a white guy leader. There were 4 guys age 13-16 and one a girl Chris age 17 and another black lady who was also kind of leading. Her name is Steph and she is such an awsome woman.

I sure learnt a lot about their culture while they were here. For example; one time I wanted to play a joke on them and come up behind them and pour water on their heads. Chris (the girl) told me if I did that they would be very insulted and would probably talk bad behind my back and get revenge. A simple playful gesture to them could seem an insult. Also another time...when they were making an assembly line passing chairs to each other, Sara and I started cheering them on "go boys go" and they got very offended by that.

The past week we have been running a daycamp for kids anywhere from 4-11 (and there were even some 2 year olds) In the morning when daycamp was just starting I had to play games with kids.

I also worked with the 4-5 year olds for awhile (helping them with their crafts ) and I also helped with the relay races. Sara and I had to participate sometimes and do 3 legged races. We were pretty darn good I must say.

Also in the past while we went to a differnet orphanage twice and visited and played games with the kids. They are all so cute and wonderful. I brought my drum and so many of the kids were very interested

This girl didn't even know me at all and just came right up to me

Many of the kids gave their testimonies and they were all so touching. This little girl came up and I'm not joking, she started off by saying: "when I was a little girl..." it was kindof funny but her story was sad. Her parents couldn't have her so she had to live with her uncle who would hang her upside down and stuff...but thank God she came to the orphange with her little brother.

The baby in the picture here was born with water in his brain and many tumors. The doctors wouldn't even assist him because they said he was going to die. After much persistence the doctor took him in. They dranined the water out of his brain and the people from the orphanage prayed for him and the tumors left. They are praying that he will be able to walk and talk. He is 3 years old and crawls around like a 1 year old and he doesn't talk yet. Except when Sara and I were leaving we said "bu bye" to him and  we heard him say:  "bu bu"

The last night before the N. Carolina team was leaving we had a Birthday Party for Allen.

Thats Allen in the back wearing one of the girls pink jackets.

This is Pablo, he's a really cool kid; he is one of the kids that always comes to play soccer. He also knows english so I can actually talk to him...and he translates what the other kids are saying for me.

Hola Amigos!

Well I figure I better post something up here because for awhile we may not be able to use the internet. The team from North Coronlina is coming today and we will be staying at the church for a few nights.

On Sunday Sara and I played in front of the church

Later that afternoon we watched the final soccer game!

We decided to do some practice cooking to get us prepared for when the team comes so on Tuesday we made MENONITE FOOD! We made Cabbage Borsht and RollKuchen (I don't know how to spell it)

Today I played lots of soccer with the neighborhood kids!

(some of the pictures will come later)

I'm trading my comfort

Well its about time I update things a little. On Thursday we went to an orpahange in Chapala just a little ways from Guadalajara. We spent the day painting the outer wall green and painting our faces a little (although we weren't sure if the lady in charge was too impressed  oh well) The orphanage was originally bought as a senors home but is being turned into an orphanage and is estimated to take about 5 more years. It is a beautiful peice of land with about 5 different buildings and a little soccer field and many fruit trees and patios. Its like a little communitiy. Two buildings will be for the girl and boy orphans and another will be for the baby orphans. The other buildings are reserved for the workers, guests, any conference speakers, a library and church. It was bought by an elderly couple from the states. Its really neat to see all the plans that are going into this and what a nice place it will be for kids to stay. While we were there, there was one kid Lee who's mother was a drug addict. He is so cute and I thought he was 2 because of his size but they say he is probably closer to 3. He doesn't say much around people but we did get to see him eat....he would pile his fork up with the slices of banana and shove them in his mouth. It was so cute.

Friday we cleaned the church and than met up with the missionary boys to practice some worship which we will be playing on Sunday  well be only playing 2 songs: I can sing of your love forever, and I'm trading my sorrows. These will be sung in spanish of course. In the evening we went to Daniels grad (it was a grade 9 grad which is celebrated more than a grade 12 grad) it was fun and we attempted to dance a little.

Today we practiced a bit more and than I got to play some soccer with some neighborhood kids (theres a little soccer field on the church property) a little later a bunch of us including a youth group from a different chruch went out and delivered flyers advertising the kids camp coming up next week. We are trying to reach out to the neighborhood kids and build a community and get the parents interested in coming to church as well. IT will be exciting. Sara and I will have to start planning meal ideas and we may include some menonite food in our plans because there is a menonite cookbook here.

I feel like I am picking up quite a bit of spanish here (much more understanding others than speaking it tho) because I am even dreaming about speaking spanish.

Pues yo voy a comer helado con fresas y galletas. Hasta Luego Amigos

Translation:

Well I am going to eat some icecream with strawberries and cookies. Until later friends.
